    Foreign forces kill 2 children after convoy runs over mine in East Afghanistan
    Xinhua: Two Afghan civilians were killed in shooting after the convoy of the U.S.-led coalition forces ran over a mine in the eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, spokesman for provincial government Attaullah Khogiani said. “A mine planted by militants struck the convoy of foreign forces in Shirgal area of Ghani Khil district this morning and the foreign soldiers in retaliation opened fire and killed two children each eight and 10 years old in the area,” Khogiani told reporters.      Full news...

    US, coalition strikes in Afghanistan spike, hit highest number in five years
    AP: The number of weapons released by U.S. and allied aircraft in Afghanistan sharply spiked in April, hitting the highest point in nearly five years. According to an airpower summary posted online this week by U.S. Air Forces Central Command, coalition aircraft released 460 weapons last month, more than double the 203 weapons released in March.     1000 suicide attempts in one year in Afghan province
    BBC Persian (Translated by RAWA): Doctors in Herat Hospital say that they need a special healthcare center with special equipment to deal with patients who attempt suicide by taking toxic substances. Dr. Aziz ul Rahman Jami, head of the emergency department told BBC that in one year (1395) about 1000 people in Herat province attempted suicide by taking toxic substances.     U.N. Finds Torture Widespread in Afghanistan
    Reuters: Torture and mistreatment of detainees by Afghan security forces is as widespread as ever, according to a U.N. report released on Monday, despite promises by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and new laws enacted by the government. At least 39 percent of the conflict-related detainees interviewed by U.N. investigators “gave credible and reliable accounts” of being tortured or experiencing other mistreatment at the hands of Afghan police, intelligence, or military personnel while in custody.      Full news...

    25 cases of suicide attempts in three days in Afghan province
    BBC Persian (Translated by RAWA): Officials in Herat Hospital have reported that 25 people have been admitted in the hospital for suicide attempts in the past three days. Aziz ul Rahman Jami, head of the emergency department said that 90% of these people were women and all the people were below thirty in age.     Child Labour in Afghan Coal Mines
    IWPR: Shir Ahmad, 12, spends all day working in the pitch darkness of a coalmine in the Dara-e Suf district of northern Samangan province. His face black with dust, he said he spent his time loading a donkey with coal to then transport to the surface. The mother-of four said that she had run away with another man after her husband beat and mistreated her.     Afghan Woman Gang-Raped After Fleeing Abusive Husband: Report
    Newsweek: A 20-year-old Afghan woman was allegedly gang-raped after escaping violence in her home, according to local media. The woman, a newlywed, was lured by a group of men and encouraged to elope with one of them after fleeing domestic violence perpetrated by her new husband, Afghan news outlet Khaama Press reports.     The Killid Group: Human rights activists want the police and security forces to deliver to the law the perpetrators of violence against women. Sima Samar, head of AIHRC (Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission) says, “If police do not help as much there can be no justice.     Mob Kills Eloped Lovers After Storming Afghan Police Station
    The New York Times: An armed mob that included relatives of a young woman who had eloped with her lover stormed a police station holding the couple in eastern Afghanistan over the weekend, then dragged the lovers off and killed them, officials and witnesses said. The mob wounded three police officers, one of them seriously, the officials and witnesses said Sunday and Monday in providing accounts of the couple’s violent deaths, often called honor killings.      Full news...
