Poll: 82 percent of Afghan youths concerned of poverty, unemployment

He said nearly 40 percent of the Afghan youths prefer to leave the country in a bid to bring improvements in their lives

The majority of Afghan youths have picked deteriorating economic situation among the top challenges they face, putting aside the political and security challenges the country is facing currently.

According to a latest poll report by Democracy International, up to 82 percent of the Afghan youths believe unemployment and poverty are the most serious challenges they are facing.

Around 4,000 Afghan youths have been interviewed during the poll by Democracy International in major cities of the country as well as villages in 34 provinces.

A member of Democracy International in Kabul, Zekriya Barekzai, said the latest poll report is totally in contrast with the previous polls where security and political challenges were on top of the report.

He said nearly 40 percent of the Afghan youths prefer to leave the country in a bid to bring improvements in their lives.

In the meantime, only 39 percent of the poll participants have said they support the government of national unity while 38 percent others have said they only trust the Afghan parliament.

The poll also reveals that the majority of the youths are skeptical of the Afghan politicians with 90 percent of the participants saying the politicians are only working for their own interests.

Around 58 percent of te participants have said they will not participate in the future elections while 38 percent others have said they have trust in democracy, according to the poll findings.

The majority of the poll participants have called for strict campaign to root out corruption and strengthen rule of law, requesting the government to immediately take strict legal actions against the corrupt officials.
