At least 28 civilians were killed and dozens more injured after Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan’s eastern border provinces on Sunday. Afghan Taliban officials said the attacks hit civilian homes in Paktia, Paktika and Kunar. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan confirmed that at least 28 civilians were killed and 49 others injured in the strikes, describing the casualties as civilians and noting that women and children were among the victims. The mission said the figures are preliminary and could rise as verification continues.

Pakistan said the strikes were part of an intelligence-based operation targeting militant hideouts following a deadly attack on a paramilitary base in Karachi that killed three security personnel. Islamabad claimed 29 militants were killed during the operation and said it was responding to cross-border terrorism.

The Taliban government condemned the airstrikes as a “cowardly act of aggression,” accusing Pakistan of causing heavy civilian casualties. Afghan officials reported a high death, while Pakistan maintained that only militant targets were struck. The casualty figures from both sides have not been independently verified.

The latest violence highlights growing tensions between the two neighbours despite previous ceasefire efforts. Pakistan continues to accuse Afghanistan of sheltering militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a claim Kabul denies, while Afghan authorities accuse Pakistan of carrying out attacks that endanger civilians.
