Local sources in Badakhshan Province say that a young woman has died by suicide in the city of Fayzabad, the provincial capital.
A source in Fayzabad, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the young woman took her own life on the evening of February 15th in the Old City area of Fayzabad.
According to the source, the 21-year-old woman ended her life by ingesting rat poison.
The source added that she was a graduate in nursing and had reportedly been facing ongoing domestic violence at home. She was said to have endured repeated physical and psychological abuse, which ultimately led her to take her own life.
Domestic violence remains a serious and widespread issue in Afghanistan and is considered one of the leading drivers of self-harm and suicide among women across the country. Rights groups have repeatedly warned that abuse within homes contributes to a high number of suicide cases nationwide.
So far, local Taliban officials in Badakhshan Province have not commented on the incident.
