Taleban 'harassing UN staff'

BBC News, May 18, 2001

The United Nations agency for Afghanistan has reported worsening interference by Taleban officials in the work of UN personnel there.

The UN co-ordinator, Erick de Mul, in a statement from Islamabad in Pakistan said some of his workers had been arrested, or harassed, and even physically abused by Taliban personnel.

Mr de Mul said he was particularly concerned about the mistreatment of Afghan nationals working for his office, who formed the backbone of the UN operation.

This was happening, Mr de Mul continued, precisely at the time when the humanitarian crisis, of drought, famine and warfare in Afghanistan, was rapidly deepening.
