The Supreme Court of the Taliban has announced the public punishment of a man and a woman in the Shiber district of Bamyan.

On Saturday, the court stated that these individuals have been sentenced on charges of “adultery.”

Taliban officials have reported that members of the group and some residents from Bamyan were present during the execution of the punishment.

According to a report in a Taliban newsletter, the punishment inflicted upon these two individuals was carried out by the judgment issued by the Bamyan Provincial Court. This punishment was further ratified by the Chief of the Public Criminal Court within the Supreme Court of the Taliban.

This underscores the Taliban’s approach to imposing and upholding their interpretation of justice, with local courts and higher authorities within their legal framework playing a crucial role in determining and administering these penalties.

The Supreme Court of the Taliban has not provided specific details about the nature of the punishment but has mentioned that each accused has received a sentence according to the penal code.

Last year, the Taliban publicly lashed a young girl and boy for alleged premarital relations in Bamyan and, in a separate incident, publicly flogged two individuals in the central area of Bamyan on charges of theft.

After regaining control over Afghanistan, the Taliban has systematically executed numerous public punishments across various provinces over the past two years. These punishments have been imposed on individuals accused of a wide range of charges, including adultery, theft, and violations of their interpretation of Islamic law.

These actions have raised significant concerns within the international community regarding human rights and the treatment of individuals under Taliban rule.

The frequency and severity of these public punishments have underscored the challenges in achieving a more inclusive and rights-respecting governance system in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s resurgence.
