BNN, August 29, 2023Student killed by Taliban for playing music in LaghmanThe Taliban consider music as forbidden and sinful in Islam and have banned it in public and private spaces.A young student was killed by Taliban gunfire in Laghman province on August 27, after he attended a wedding party where music was played. The incident occurred in the Qarghayi district of the eastern province, where the Taliban have a strong presence. The victim was identified as Samiullah, a resident of the Chapa Daria area of Qarghayi district. He was a first-year student at the Faculty of Agriculture of Nangarhar University, one of the largest and oldest universities in Afghanistan. According to local sources, Samiullah was returning from the wedding party with his friends when their cars were attacked by Taliban fighters. He was shot in the head and died on the spot, while his friends managed to escape. The Taliban consider music as forbidden and sinful in Islam and have banned it in public and private spaces. During their previous rule from 1996 to 2001, they destroyed musical instruments, cassettes, and radios, and punished those who listened or played music. They also prohibited celebrating weddings with dancing and music. After their recent takeover of Afghanistan, they have resumed their crackdown on music and musicians, who fear for their lives and livelihoods. Some radio and TV stations have stopped playing music to avoid confrontation with the Taliban. Laghman province is located in the eastern part of Afghanistan, bordering the provinces of Panjshir, Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar, Kabul and Kapisa. It has a population of about 502,148 people, who are mostly Pashtuns, Tajiks and Pashai tribes. The province has a rich history and culture, and hosts many historical landmarks, minarets, monuments and relics. The province is also known for its agriculture, especially rice, wheat, cotton and fruits. The province has been under the control of the Taliban since August 15, when they captured the capital city of Mihtarlam after a brief fight with the Afghan security forces. The Taliban have appointed Zain-Ul-Abideen as the governor of Laghman. The situation in the province is tense and uncertain, as many people fear the return of the harsh rule of the Taliban. The killing of Samiullah is a tragic example of the violence and repression that the people of Laghman face under the Taliban regime. Characters Count: 2735 |
