Continued fighting between two warlords in central Kapisa province has forced many residents to leave homes for safer places, local said on Wednesday.

The former mujahedeen commanders in Koh-i-Band district have been locked in hostilities for the past many years. Residents told Pajhwok Afghan News both sides continued to use heavy weapons against each other, inflicting heavy losses on people as well.

One resident Sur Gul said at least 30 people had lost their lives so far on both sides. “The commanders have set up check-posts in the area to attack each other. At least 100 families have left Darnami village.”

Iqbal Safi, a parliamentarian from Kapisa, meanwhile, criticised the government for its failure to disarm the commanders, who had been a nuisance to the masses.

Governor Gen. Mehrabuddin Safi, acknowledging the problem, said that efforts had been underway to convince the hostile commanders into striking a patch-up.
