Afghanistan’s Drug War

With over one million Afghanis addicted to drugs, Afghanistan has lagged far behind when it comes to curtailing its bourgeoning drug production and trafficking.

In the video above, CNN reporter Lindsey Tugman sheds light on the exacerbating drug crisis in Afghanistan and the lack of collective action in the international community to provide a solution.

“With Afghanistan producing 90 percent of the world's opium, the main ingredient of heroin, drugs here are pure in quality and very cheap," she says, adding that there are one million drug addicts, which make up eight percent of the population according to the latest United Nations report.

The report reveals that the acreage cultivated with opium poppies has doubled since 2001, a sign that many have seen as showing the general failure of antinarcotics efforts in Afghanistan.
