Faryab floods wash away 16

Sixteen people were washed away and hundreds of livestock killed by floods in the northern province of Faryab, officials said on Thursday.

The floods hit Dalbi and Qoraye villages of Almar district on Wednesday evening, when the 16 people living under two tents went missing, a tribal elder said.

Mohammad Amin Baig told Pajhwok Afghan News 12 dead bodies were had been found and a search for the rest was on. Local residents are conducting the search operation.

The district chief, Saleh Mohammad Saleh, confirmed the flooding and said they were assessing the situation.

An emergency meeting had been called on how best to help the victims, said Governor Abdul Haq Safaq. A delegation would be sent to the district to investigate the impact of the floods, he added.
