3 protesters killed in Faryab protest against night raid

Three protestors were killed and another 33, including eight policemen injured, during a clash in northern Faryab province, officials said on Friday.

More than 1,000 people took to the streets on Thursday in Maimana, the provincial capital, against the operation that resulted in the death of madraasa teacher Qayamuddin in Arab Khan area.

Qayamuddin’s brothers and a cousin, who were detained during the raid in Arab Khana area by Afghan and international troops, were released on Friday morning.

Emergency ward head at the Afghan-Turk Hospital Dr. Ahmad Farid Naimati, said an eight-year-old child was among the three people killed during the clash.

Another 33 wounded people, including eight policemen, were brought to the hospital for medical treatment, he said, without commenting on their health condition.

But Faryab Public Health Director Dr. Abdul Ali Halim confirmed receiving 25 injured people, saying that two of them died of serious injuries.

The ISAF media office in Kabul said the teacher was responsible for military supplies to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and suicide attacks in northern provinces. It said the man was killed after he opened fire at the joint force.

Carrying the victim’s coffin, the protestors marched on the governor's house, chanting slogans against the US and Afghan governments. They called for the immediate release of the detainees.

Afghanistan Ulema council member Maulvi Nasir Ahmad said five protestors were killed and 30 others injured during the violence.
