The tombs of Nadir Khan and other members of the royal family lie in a crypt under this building. These tombs were also opened by the fundamentalists because they were looking for gold coffins. A few days before Zahir Shah visited Kabul after the fall of the Taliban, the Karzai government repaired the graves so that the former king would not suffer from witnessing this unthinkable destruction.

Zahir Shah's wife was also buried in this crypt. In his will, Zahir Shah has instructed that he be buried between his father and his wife in this crypt.
