Seven workers of UN-affiliated NGO killed in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD (NNI): At least seven workers of a UN-affiliated NGO were gunned down in Afghanistans southern Herat province," Afghan and UN sources said here.

The workers, all local Afghans were associated with the Organization for Mine Clearing and Rehabilitation (OMAR), an NGO working under the United Nations. They were travelling in two cars to the neighbouring province of Badghis when ambushed by unknown gunmen in Herat bordering Iran.

The Taliban Governor in the province, Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa, has blamed the opposition Northern Alliance for the attack, saying the assailants have been arrested. The oppositions reaction was not immediately available.

The OMAR office in Peshawar also confirmed the incident, but declined to give any details. The slain people belonged to the Afghan eastern province of Ningrahar.
